Replacing Your Drivers License or ID Remotely

Option 1 – Digital Renewal/Replacement

You have two options for renewing your driver’s licence or ID card without visiting a registry office. If you have an Alberta.ca account, you can apply online for a driver’s licence renewal or ID card renewal.

Please note:

  • Digital renewal is only available for renewals, not for duplicate services.
  • A driver’s licence that is currently suspended is ineligible for this service.
  • A driver’s licence or ID card that has been expired for more than six months is ineligible for this service.
  • If there have been changes to any demographic information on file, the licence is ineligible for this service.
  • If there are outstanding fines, the licence is ineligible for this service.

If you do not have an Alberta.ca account or prefer to apply with a registry agent directly, please refer to the information below.

Option 2 – Renewal/Replacement Via Online Registry

If you are temporarily out of the province or unable to visit a registry office due to medical reasons, you can apply for a Remote Renewal service. This service allows Alberta to issue a new driver’s licence or ID card without requiring your physical presence at a registry office.

Please note:

  • A driver’s licence that is currently suspended is ineligible for this service.
  • A driver’s licence or ID card that has been expired for more than six months will require proof of Canadian entitlement to be submitted with the application.
  • Our registry does not offer pick-up services.
  • Outstanding fines must be paid (this does not apply to ID cards). Payment can be made at the same time as the renewal service.

To apply, you must complete a Renewal/Replacement Licence Form and submit your application through one of the following methods:

Once our office receives your request, we will review your documents and contact you via email with:

  • Any necessary corrections to the application
  • Any questions the government may have regarding your application

Fees:

  • $28.00 replacement fee (incl GST)
  • $26.00 for a 1-year driver’s licence renewal / $14.00 for a 1-year ID card renewal (incl GST)

Payment Methods:

  • In person at the registry by an authorized third party
  • Credit card online using a secure payment link (an additional $2.00 charge applies)

After your application is approved, we will contact you via email with instructions on how to send payment.

Processing Times:

  • Temporary licence/ID card via email (no photo): 2-3 business days
  • Physical licence/ID received by mail: Approximately 10 business days

Please note: If you are approved for Remote Renewal, you will be required to provide proof of Alberta residency and legal presence during your next registry service.
