Vehicle Information Report

A Vehicle Information Report (VIR) provides details about a vehicle’s registration history specifically within Alberta. The report is generated using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), a unique serial number assigned to each vehicle by the manufacturer or through the Insurance Bureau of Canada’s assigned VIN program. To request a VIR, you must provide an accurate and complete VIN.

The VIR includes the following information:

  • Date and time of the report
  • Vehicle description: year, make, model, style, color, fuel type, and odometer reading (if available)
  • Vehicle status: active, salvage, non-repairable, unsafe, rebuilt, etc.
  • Vehicle registration details: the date the vehicle was first entered into the system, license plate classification, and registration history (no personal information or license plate numbers of current or previous owners is shown)
  • Lien information: indicates the number of liens and related instruments registered in Alberta and associated with the vehicle’s serial number (detailed information such as the secured party and the party to whom money is owed can be obtained by purchasing a separate Personal Property lien search)

Please note that the VIR only includes information from the Alberta Motor Vehicle System and does not cover any data from other provinces or countries where the vehicle may have been registered. Additionally, the VIR provides information from the last 10 years of registration history.
