Commercial Vehicle Inspections

The Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) is a mandatory safety inspection required for certain commercial vehicles and is not a substitute for the ongoing preventive maintenance performed by vehicle owners.

An annual CVIP inspection is necessary for:

  • Any vehicle with a registered weight of 11,794 kg or more when operating within Alberta.
  • Any vehicle with a registered weight of 4,500 kg or more when operating outside of Alberta.

If a CVIP expires, Alberta legislation permits the vehicle to be driven directly to a licensed CVIP facility for inspection. The vehicle must not stop at any other location along the way and must proceed straight to the inspection facility.

If stopped by authorities, the driver must provide:

  • The phone number of the inspection facility.
  • The date and time the inspection is scheduled.

For more detailed information on CVIP, visit Alberta Transportation’s website.

There is no Fee for this service through Lethbridge Registry.
