When registering a vehicle from outside Alberta, most vehicles are required to undergo an Out of Province Inspection. This process begins by purchasing an inspection request form from our office, which you then take to one of the Approved Inspection Locations in Alberta. To purchase this form, you’ll need to present your photo ID and either your out-of-province registration or bill of sale.
Certain vehicles may be exempt from this inspection if they meet one of the following conditions:
- Vehicles from Manitoba, British Columbia, or Saskatchewan:
- The vehicle is less than four years old.
- Proof of registration from SK/BC/MB in the name of the person requesting the exemption is provided.
- The vehicle is brought to the Registry for VIN validation.
- Vehicles Inspected Within the Last 90 Days in BC or Saskatchewan:
- Proof of registration from SK/BC/MB in the name of the person requesting the exemption is provided.
- A government-issued inspection certificate from the last 90 days is presented.
- The vehicle is brought to the Registry for VIN validation.
- Brand New Vehicles Purchased Within the Last 90 Days in Canada:
- The bill of sale must be in the name of the person requesting the exemption.
- The vehicle is brought to the Registry for VIN validation.
- Brand New Vehicles Purchased in the United States:
- The bill of sale must be no more than 90 days old and in the name of the person requesting the exemption.
- The stamped vehicle import form and original Certificate of Origin must be provided.
- The vehicle is brought to the Registry for VIN validation.
- Vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) Over 11,794 kg:
- An Out of Province Vehicle Inspection is not required. Instead, a Commercial Vehicle Inspection must be completed.
- The commercial inspection must be no more than 14 days old.

Once the inspection is completed, it must be returned to a registry within 14 days to remain valid.
